Literally, leadership or leadership is a skill or a management function to influence, motivate, or direct others to do things to achieve certain goals. In an organization (government or business/company), leadership is very important to direct and coordinate all members of the organization or people involved in the organization so that the goals of the organization can be achieved properly.
To prepare reliable and resilient future business/company leaders, the Thailand-based Charoen Pokphand Group (CP) established an institution called the Charoen Pokphand Leadership Institute (CPLI). CPLI is not only tasked with recruiting graduates from the best universities, but also educating and developing these talents so that they become reliable business leaders in the future.
On March 7 2023, the Head of Master of Animal Science Study Program, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Agriculture UNDIP had the opportunity to visit and attend a presentation on various programs being run by CPLI in Thailand. The event was supported by PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia through a program called Charoen Pokphand Best Student Appreciation (CPBSA) Batch 4. Several matters related to leadership in global scale companies were of particular concern in the presentation. There are three things that must be instilled in each individual student so that in the future they can become strong leaders. These three things include management skills, attitude and DNA of leadership. Management skills are
abilities that include things like planning, decision making, problem solving, communication, delegation, and time management. Attitude is the attitude, behavior or behavior of a person in interacting with other people accompanied by a tendency to act in accordance with that attitude. DNA of leadership or sense of leadership is a “code” that must be understood by every leader, which includes personal proficiency (readiness to become a leader), human capital developer (leaders are required to know who is above them, which supports their organization so that it can continue running), talent manager (leaders must know their partners so they can match the organization’s vision), strategist (leaders must know where the organization they are leading will take), and executor (wise decision makers who will ensure the direction of the organization being led).
Based on the needs and criteria for the young leaders required by the companies mentioned above, the university’s role in preparing future leaders is very crucial. Developing a curriculum in tertiary institutions that can equip graduates with adequate management skills, attitude and DNA of leadership is something that must be done. Students should also be encouraged to develop their leadership spirit through student organizations that exist within study programs, faculties, and universities. Faculties or universities must also provide adequate supporting facilities so that student activities on campus become more enthusiastic.
